Gramps

A large orange box promisingair conditioning, cold beer and cocktails” does not inspire confidence if you are out for some good fun in Wynwood. And Wynwood invented good fun. Have faith. Gramps is the king of the Wynwood bar scene and has earned a reputation as one of the best outdoor music venues in Miami.

Gramps has three distinct areas: The main room with a long bar, cozy booths, and vintage arcade games. Smaller, intimate Shirley’s is the venue for smaller shows. A spacious patio, with a covered dance floor, one more bar, and a pizza stand is where they have big shows. And big shows they have, with a nightly roster of great musicians.

Music is not all that is happening at Gramps. They have trivia, bingo, movie nights, comedy acts, alligator wrestling and who knows what will they come up with next.

If all that is not enough, come on Thursday. They call it Double Stubble, the bar’s big dance party and drag show.

To call the atmosphere quirky would be an understatement. Mismatched furniture, a bunch of vintage but very popular video games, and an outrageous outdoor tiki bar are the backgrounds to what you came for: great live music and plenty to drink. And they have whatever your heart desires.

There is just about anything to drink you can imagine: PBR by the can, local beers from Cigar City Brewing and Funky Buddha by the pint, sparkly wines, sake on tap, and funky creative cocktails.

You will not starve at Gramps. Pizza Tropical, located in the main room, offers Brooklyn-style pizzas, considered among the best in town.

The Sylvester

The regulars say that if you have to be stuck somewhere during a hurricane, The Sylvester is probably your best bet. This popular bar is not ashamed of its Florida vibe – pink flamingoes wallpaper is in your eye. But the place is cozy, the seating is very comfortable and the table lamps create the atmosphere of a posh club.

Their cocktails are cutting edge and there are a lot of them. Try Floradora (Ketel One Grapefruit, Rose Botanical, Raspberry, Cocchi Rosa, Q Hibiscus Ginger Beer.)

The food is fabulous. Chicken liver mousse, smoked white fish, sausage board, pastrami medianoche and such. All are made of locally sourced sustainable ingredients.

You can dance to the funky music or you can play pool.

They are open until three in the morning.

Shots Miami is considered a hot, trendy bar for more than its shots. It is lively, colorful and hopping on most nights. There is indoor and outdoor space with an open dance floor and fun décor such as colorful umbrellas hanging from the ceiling. A lot of seating places but you have  to grab them in time. Murals everywhere make sure you do not forget you are in a Wynwood bar.

Music varies from day to day. On weekdays and Sundays the beat is Latin. On the weekends it is Latin in the inside bar and diverse outside. Thursdays and Sundays expect a Caribbean party.

The multiple bars both indoors and outdoors make sure you can get your shots without having to wait too long.

The décor is chic and colorful – it has to be since you are in a Wynwood bar after all.

You can fill Hookahs with a variety of flavors such as mojito mojo or spiced chai. They have a good selection of cold beer and delicious appetizer platters with hummus, stuffed grape leaves and other treats.

Cigar aficionados can find a nice selection of cigars in their humidor.

Of course, there is great music and a giant screen for watching your favorite game. On most nights, this bar is open until 3 am.

You get your beer, wine and cheese, pay for them at the counter and find yourself a cozy spot to enjoy the music. Choose a comfortable vintage sofa or grab one of the mismatched chairs and park it on the lawn under the stars. Twinkling lights make the atmosphere magical.

But the true magic comes from the music. This place is famous for some of the best live jazz, folk, blues and soul bands in town.

They have 150 kinds of bottled wine in their cooler. Expect to find some wonders. There are wines from everywhere, including France and Spain.

To go with the wine, try their Italian cured meat and cheese platters, they are fabulous.

Lagniappe is open Sunday to Thursday from 6:00 pm to 2:00 am

Wynwood Bars Open Late

Rácket

If you are discovering the Wynwood bar scene for the first time, start with Rácket.  This upscale bar, lounge and nightlife entertainment spot is elegant, enormous and fun.

The roster of live music groups makes it a hotspot for the weekend crowd. Here you can meet just about anyone: tourists, office workers having a few cocktails after work, town fashionistas and of course the local art crowd.

Racket has three distinct rooms with a very different ambiance. As you enter, you will first see a covered atrium with a rum and tequila bar. As you venture further in you will get to the main room with a central sky-lit and steel island bar where you should sample

Racket has a range of seasonal imaginative craft cocktails and a good selection of local beers. The cocktail list starts with your regular Moscow Mules and Whiskey Sours, but does not end there. There are about 20 house cocktails you can explore all night.

Further in, a staircase will take you to another bar with yet another different vibe.

The food is not your average bar grub. They are too fancy for that. Try their ahi tuna rolls, truffle salt chips, and wagyu sliders.

The bar and lounge, the main room, has a pool table, a few arcade games, a jukebox and projectors showing music videos, NFL and MLB games, and your other favorite sports.

The DJs play hip-hop and open-format music, but there is a rich program of live music performances. You have to check their website or Facebook page to see what is coming.

Racket is hopping until 3 am from Wednesday to Sunday.
