Things to Do in Conroe Tx – A Great Weekend Away

I recently discovered that there are so many fun things to do in Conroe Tx that a weekend may not be enough. There are so many great reasons to visit Texas. First of all, it is the hub of cowboy America. Secondly, it is just so large that there are so many little towns each offering its unique characteristics. It is impossible to be bored in Texas.

It is often stated that Texas is a country in and of itself. The reason for this is largely due to the fact that it is the second-biggest state in America. Texas has a range of different climates and vastly diverse landscapes.

It sports woods and forests on the one side and beautiful beaches on the other. The West of Texas is complete desolation and the East is covered in swamps.

I haven’t visited all of Texas, but I am proud to now have crossed Conroe off my list. The summers in Conroe are very hot and the winters fairly cold and typically short. Conroe receives a great deal of rain throughout the year as well.

If you too are planning a trip to Conroe, Texas, I highly suggest visiting either from April to June or early September to late October. These are the best times to visit as you’ll have plenty of things to do in Conroe, TX, during the warmer weather months.

Conroe is such a special town with so much to offer that it should be on your travel list if it isn’t already.

There are many things to do in Conroe, TX over the weekend, but a brewery tops my list. The Southern Star Brewing Company is a hub of activity over the weekend and well worth a visit. Established in 2007, they were the first craft brewery in Texas to produce canned craft beer.

Their beer has become so popular that they now offer a lot more than just drinks on 13 acres of brand-new property.
I tremendously enjoyed their taproom overlooking the production floor of the brewery. Here you can purchase a souvenir pint glass to take home along with beer tickets to try their brews.

They also have a wonderful Biergarten, or beer garden, outside complete with a live music stage. That means that on weekends there is live music playing while you enjoy a cold one. There is also a disc golf course for those that don’t like sitting still.

A brewery may not sound like a family-friendly activity, but it is at Southern Star. Children are welcome as long as they are accompanied by an adult. And your leashed dog is also a welcome friend in the outdoor beer garden.

On Saturdays, Southern Star Brewing Company offers brewery tours from 14:00 to 16:00 for those interested in the inner operations of a brewery. This may just be the inspiration you need to start brewing your own craft beer at home!

Visit the 7-Acre Wood:

Although it isn’t a 100-Acre Wood, children will still find fun and animal friends in Conroe’s 7-Acre Wood. Of all the things to do in Conroe, TX, the 7-Acre Wood is possibly the most child-friendly option.

Over the weekend, Conroe’s 7-Acre Wood is bustling with activity. I discovered that families flock to this spot because there is so much to keep everyone occupied. Admission is low at only $6.50 and it offers access to all that this place offers.

The 7-Acre Wood has child-friendly activities in the form of mini-golf, a petting zoo, a scooter track, giant Lego room, giant chess, checkers and connect four, horseshoes, a giant sandbox, a puppet house, swing set, playground, and pony rides.

There is also a Zipline and various sports including basketball, tetherball, soccer, and football. Barrel train rides and pony rides are only available on Saturdays and Sundays, so be sure to visit on the weekend.

I found that the petting zoo was a particular favorite among the children. If you have kids, they will delight in meeting and greeting all the animals. There are llamas, donkeys, goats, chickens, ponies, deer, a cow, ducks, and at the right time of year even baby goats. All the animals are friendly and children can interact with them.

It is also possible to host private parties at the 7-Acre Wood. Children will delight in the Pony Lovers’ Parties where they and their friends can hop on for pony rides all day long!

Splash Around at Big Rivers Waterpark:

Sticking with the child-friendly theme, next on my list is Big Rivers Waterpark. This is ideal whether you have children tagging along or not. However, for those that do have children, this all-day activity is sure to keep them entertained.

There is enough to do at this waterpark to ensure that everyone has a good time, regardless of age. There are wave pools, waterslides, river areas, Ziplines, climbing walls, and obstacle courses. This is the ideal place for adventurous travelers and those looking for a day of fun.

The Waterpark sports the largest lazy river in the Houston area. There are also so many waterslides and water features that this activity is best enjoyed during the summer months. As there are so many things to keep you occupied, it is best to devote an entire day to the park.

The Wild Isle at the waterpark will have you playing “the floor is lava” but with water instead. This floating obstacle course filled with challenges floats in the middle of a lake. Friends can challenge each other around the course and slip, slide, crawl, and bounce along. Be careful not to fall into the water!

Even if you do go in the summer and the weather doesn’t play along, there will still be enough to keep you busy. This waterpark has dry activities including a petting zoo, archery, ax throwing, and a maze. This means that there will be plenty to do even if you don’t feel like getting wet.

Indulge in History at the Heritage Museum:

The Heritage Museum of Montgomery County may not be large, but it is a very interesting place to visit. It is the home of the Lone Star flag and steeped in Texas history. If you’re looking for things to do in Conroe Tx that will give you an inside look at what makes Texas so unique, this is it.

The Lone Star State is proud of its flag and you can see where it all started at this museum. The museum has a replica of the office where the first Secretary of State of the Republic of Texas, and local Conroe resident, Dr. C. B. Stewart designed the lone star flag that is so well-known today.

There are entire exhibits depicting the true-blue Texan oil and lumber industries and historic homes. Although children may be bored by ordinary museums, they certainly won’t be at this one. The Heritage Museum contains an old-fashioned general store and the kids can try on historic costumes.

This is a great place to teach children a little bit about the history and have them engage in it as well. The gift shop has several handmade items to take home as souvenirs, so tourists love it. It is also a fantastic place to stop on a Saturday morning and as admission is free, it is open to everyone.

Get Your Cowboy On at the Rodeo:

A horse galloping and sliding in the dirt.

No Texas trip would be complete without a day at the rodeo. It was one of the first things I wanted to do when making my way to the Lone Star state. The fair and rodeo are two things that are synonymous with Texas, and I had to experience them.

Texas is the home of the cowboy, and Conroe is no different. It celebrates its cowboy heritage proudly with a prominent fair and rodeo that anyone can visit. The Montgomery Country Fair Association is responsible for hosting both the fair and rodeo.

I have always loved horses, so the rodeo was an obvious stop. There is nothing quite like thundering hooves and the cheer of a crowd to get one’s pulse racing.

The Youth Rodeo hosted by this association is perfect for little ones wanting to get into the thick of it. It involves a stick horse race, inflatable pony race, and “mutton busting”. The excitement mounts with Ranch Rodeo. This is a unique experience allowing visitors an insider look at the lives of real cowboys. It involves competitions between teams featuring real-life cowboy duties.

If you’re looking for a fast-paced thrill ride, make sure to catch the barrel racing events. Barrel racing is an exciting, fast-paced sport where a rider speeds around an obstacle course on a horse. The horse has to navigate three separate barrels and it is a thrill ride like no other.

I tremendously enjoyed experiencing the rodeo for myself. I highly suggest this outing to anyone wanting a true Texas experience.

Kayak Down the Woodlands Waterway:

The center of Conroe is bustling with activity, but for a quieter scene venture just 10 minutes downtown. The Woodlands is an area of Conroe where a man-made waterway winds through the greenery. This area is filled with shopping centers and beautiful green spaces.

I rented a kayak to explore the waterway myself. The riverwalk is truly stunning and I had great fun leisurely paddling down it. It is a serene and beautiful place just minutes away from all the activity. It offers you a chance to settle in for some peace and quiet.

Although I rented a kayak, it is also possible to rent a luxury swan boat or stand-up paddleboard to get around. Regardless of how you choose to paddle, be sure to get on the water at the Woodlands Waterway.

After dark, The Woodlands really comes to life. I highly recommend taking a paddle down the waterway late afternoon. If you do, then you’ll be nice and relaxed just in time for dinner. Dinner can be enjoyed at any of the many eateries dotted along The Woodlands Waterway. It is the perfect way to round off a mild summer evening.

Watch a Show at Crighton Theatre:

The theatre has called my name ever since I was little. I have always adored the fantastic costuming and beautiful set designs of the stage. A night at the theatre is an experience that will stay with you for a long time afterward. There is a certain magic in the theatre and dramatic arts. It ensnares your senses and transports you to a different world.

The Crighton Theatre is very special and unique. It is a vaudevillian playhouse designed in an Italian-Romanesque style. The playhouse was originally built in 1934 and is completely restored. It is a beautiful place dripping with energy and magic. It is perfect for anyone that has a love of the stage and will entertain young and old alike.

The historic building is the perfect backdrop for classic plays that they put on throughout the year. You can expect to catch well-known musicals and shows like Steel Magnolias, School of Rock, and Grease. They also host live concerts, so be sure to check the calendar ahead of your trip!

Crighton Theatre also has a special children’s theatre program for the little ones. They put on shows specifically for children. It is the perfect way to introduce your kids to the magic of the stage.

I highly recommend having dinner and drinks at one of the local taverns and then heading to Crighton Theatre. It is a wonderful way to end an evening and will leave you wanting more.

Take Flight in a B17 Bomber:

B17 Flying Fortress World War 2 bomber

This activity can be a little more on the expensive side, but it is worth every penny. Conroe is the home of the Montgomery County Airpark. This airport is the home of one of the most significant and important planes of World War Two. History buffs will delight in seeing the B-17 Flying Fortress in these hallowed halls.

Today there are only 46 B17 Flying Fortress planes still in existence. Only 10 of these are airworthy. That means that you will be experiencing something that you’re unlikely to come across again. This visit will cost a little more than the ordinary day trip, but it will be worth it.

It is a fantastic piece of history that will engage and interest anyone. It is also possible to pay for a ticket to fly in the bomber plane. There is nothing quite as memorable as flying in a literal piece of history.

For the right price, it is even possible to sit in the navigator or bombardier’s seat! This is an experience of a lifetime. Anyone with a love of flying, planes, and history, should make this a priority.

Cast a Line at Lake Conroe:

Fishing is a fabulous pastime. It is one of the more peaceful things to do in Conroe, Tx. Conroe is known for a relatively mild climate and fishing conditions are excellent throughout the year. During the summer, the weather is mild and wonderful for lazy days by the lake. And lakes rarely freeze over during the winter in Texas.

Lake Conroe is over 20 miles long, so there are plenty of spots to make yourself comfortable. The hybrid bass fishing at Lake Conroe is the best in the state. However, there are plenty of other fish species to keep you occupied as well.

The Lake sports dozens of marinas, so you’re sure to find the perfect place to cast your line. Lake Conroe is located in a park, so even if the entire family doesn’t fish, they won’t be bored. There are plenty of picnic areas and spaces to play beach volleyball. Toss some meat on the BBQ, cast your line, and let your family enjoy the day.

When the day is done, it is a good idea to celebrate your catch with an evening on a historic boat. Dinner cruises are offered on the lake itself on beautifully restored old boats. The paddleboat, the Southern Empress, offers dinner, drinks, and dancing. It is quite a classy party. It is one of the fancier things to do in Conroe, Tx, and it is the perfect way to round off a wonderful day.

Pick a Basket of Blueberries at Moorhead’s Blueberry Farm:

Moorhead is a wonderful place to visit in Conroe any day of the week. Moorhead’s Blueberry Farm is the oldest commercial blueberry farm in Texas. It is set on 20 acres and guests are welcome to pick as many blueberries as they want.

I spent a wonderful morning at the farm, indulging in beautiful blueberries. There are as many as 20 different varieties to choose from, so you’re truly spoiled for choice. Children will enjoy traipsing about and picking the very best blueberries to take home. As you are charged per pound, you can get as much or as little as you prefer. There is no set number of berries to pick.

The farm is both pesticide and chemical-free, so there is nothing to worry about with these berries. I highly suggest popping in for a visit between April and July as this is the best time for berries. It does depend on the weather though, so call ahead if you’re unsure.

They have historically been open seven days a week from seven in the morning until nine at night. However, it is possible that due to weather they may close early or only be open on weekends. Check their Facebook page to keep up with changes!
